VOL. VII. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1866. No. 34
Superintendent's Office,
Napier, October 15, 1866.
THE following letter and its enclosure are published for general information.
Council Chamber, Napier,
October 15, 1866.
Sir,βI have the honor to enclose a letter received from Lieutenant-Colonel Whitmore, Commanding the local Forces, in reply to the resolution of the Provincial Council of Hawke's Bay, forwarded to him by me, on the 13th instant.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your very obedient servant,
C. LAMBERT,
Provincial Council, Hawke's Bay.
His Honor the Superintendent,
Hawke's Bay.
Napier, October 13, 1866.
Sir,βI have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of this day's date, with the enclosed resolution passed unanimously by the Provincial Council of Hawke's Bay, expressing their opinion of the recent operations performed by the Colonial Forces engaged with the Hau Hau fanatics.
In the name of the officers and men of the Colonial Forces, yesterday engaged with the Hau Hau, I beg that you will be so good as to convey to the Provincial Council our thanks for their flattering recognition of the service readily and willingly rendered by them; and I venture further to assure the Council in my own behalf, and that of those who served under my orders, that, if it should ever again unhappily become necessary for the repression of outrage in our Province, to seek aid for the civil power, our fellow settlers, organized for the moment as a military force, will be found as willing and ready to take the field, and to lay down, if need be, their lives in defence of our hearths, homes, and liberties, as on the late occasion.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
G. S. WHITMORE,
Lieutenant-Colonel Commanding
Napier Militia District.
