REPORT

OF INSPECTOR OF SHEEP FOR THE

NORTHERN DISTRICT.

Government Buildings,
28th March, 1865.

SIR,—I have the honor to inform you
that I have examined all the Flocks in the Northern District, and have much pleasure in reporting them clean and healthy.

I have also to report favorably of the working of the Sheep and Scab Amendment Act; and that the apparatus recently erected on the Spit for dipping sheep is now complete, and Sheep Owners generally express great satisfaction that such precautions are taken to prevent the introduction of Scab into this province.

I have only one case to bring before your Honor’s notice—that of Mr. Wm. Morris of Te Mahia who, during the present month, sent down by vessel to Napier five hundred and nine Sheep.
His Agent protested against the Sheep being dipped. In your Honor’s absence, I consulted the Deputy Superintendent, who advised me to abide by the Act for the present, and dip the Sheep, and to keep an account of the actual cost incurred in doing so: this I have done, and find that the cost is fivepence farthing per Head. The only remark I have to make on the above case is, that it certainly bears rather hard on Mr. Morris, seeing that the same vessel that brings Mr. Morris’s Sheep from the Port of Napier to Te Wairoa or Te Mahia for instance and not be subject to the Act.

I have the honor to be

Sir,
Your most obdt. servant,

GAVIN PEACOCK.

His Honor
the Superintendent.
Napier.
