Napier, Oct. 14th, 1864.
THE following Report and Mete-
rological Table are published for
general information.
DONALD M’LEAN,
Superintendent.
Meteorological Station,
Napier, Oct. 5th, 1864.
The fine climate of the Province of
Hawke’s Bay is universally acknowledged. A careful perusal of the above
Table will show that the highest tem-
perature in the summer months seldom
exceeds 91 ° Fahrenheit, and in winter
months rarely below 30 ° Fahrenheit.
In fact, after a residence here of 5
years, I am able, with perhaps every
inhabitant of the Province, to endorse
the opinion of Commander Drury,
published so long ago as July 5, 1855,
who states—“I am inclined to believe
that the climate of Hawke’s Bay is the
best in New Zealand—alike exempt
from the humidity of Auckland and
the breezes of Wellington. It is im-
possible to prove more by a whole cata-
logue of statistics. The average rain-
fall is little more than 3 inches per
month, which is pretty regularly dis-
tributed.
The ordinary summer winds are
North East veering to North West,
with dry hazy weather during the day,
succeeded by Westerly or land breezes
during the night; and heavy gales
occur occasionally from North East,
but they come on gradually and give
timely warning of their approach.
A. KOCH,
Meteorological Registrar.
