✨ Provincial Notices
Superintendent's Office,
Napier, May 21, 1863.
THE following letters are published for general information.
DONALD M'LEAN,
Superintendent.
New Plymouth,
10th May, 1863.
Sir,—Since writing yesterday, I have received news from Auckland as to the proceedings of the Natives in the North, which make it advisable that you should have the power of calling out the Militia of Hawke’s Bay at once, if necessary, without the delay of another reference to Auckland.
I accordingly enclose you a Proclamation, enabling Major Whitmore to call out the Militia of your Province. He will no doubt avail himself of your advice as to the time and manner of calling them out.
I have not had time to ascertain whether Major Whitmore is willing to accept this command; but from his known zeal and energy I take it for granted he will accept it, while from his talents and other military qualities I am aware of no one in Hawke’s Bay so fit for it.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedt. servant,
(Signed),
ALFRED DOMETT.
His Honor the Superintendent
Hawke’s Bay.
New Plymouth,
10th May, 1863.
Sir,—I have the honor to offer you the command of the Militia and Volunteers of Hawke’s Bay Province.
I need not say there is no one in the Province in whose zeal ability and general fitness for this command Government has so much confidence as in your own.
If you accept this command a Commission shall be sent you bearing date this day as soon as possible.
I have also sent to the Superintendent of Hawke’s Bay a Proclamation enabling you to call out the Militia, as no doubt from His Honor’s great experience of the Maories and knowledge of their sentiment and character, you would consult him as to the time and necessity for exercising the powers thus given you.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedt. servant,
(Signed),
ALFRED DOMETT.
Major Whitmore,
Hawke’s Bay.
