Sir,—I have to request your Honor to be good enough to direct the Police in the Province of Hawke’s Bay to exercise the utmost vigilance in preventing under the Arms Act the illegal sale of Arms and Ammunition.
The present circumstances of the Northern Island render this vigilance a matter of vital importance.

THE following Report made by Capt. Gibson of the s. ship Auckland, is published for general information.

Report made by Capt. Gibson, s. ship Auckland:—
11th August, 1863, 7.45 a.m., weighed and canted ship; Sh s.t on full speed, and rounded Ahuriri Bluff. 8.20 a.m., ship heading S.E. by E., grazed a rock without stopping her headway; immediately stopped the engines, closed the valves in the watertight bulkheads, and sounded each compartment. Depth of water alongside nine fathoms; tide three quarters ebb; ship’s draught forward 11ft, aft 12ft 6in. Compass bearing taken immediately after striking—north-eastern extreme of Ahuriri Bluff, West Cape Kidnappers S.E. by E. I can confidently state the bearings to be correct. 8.30 finding the ship making no water, proceeded at half-speed; hand lead kept constantly going, and pump works sounded half-hourly.

VICTORIA by the grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen Defender of the Faith to James Butcher Brathwaite Manager of the Union Bank of Australia at Napier in the Province of Hawke’s Bay and Colony of New Zealand Esquire greeting
WHEREAS an action is now pending in the Supreme Court of New Zealand for the Middle District at Napier in the said Province of Hawke’s Bay wherein William Maltby of Napier aforesaid merchant carrying on business under the firm of Maltby and company is plaintiff and James Fougère late of Clive aforesaid Publican but now of Guernsey in Great Britain is defendant and in order that the plaintiff may proceed in his action we command you that you do retain and keep all and singular lands and hereditaments monies and chattels and other property of whatsoever nature in the custody or under the control of you, the said James Butcher Brathwaite at the time of the service of this writ or in which such defendant shall at that time be legally or equitably entitled or otherwise beneficially interested and whether solely or jointly with any other person or persons and we further command you that you in your own proper person be and appear before such Judge of our said court as shall be sitting in chambers at Napier aforesaid on the eighth day of August now next at eleven o’clock in the forenoon and there to be examined touching the premises and to do and receive what shall then and there be considered of you in that behalf and this you shall in no wise omit Witness Alexander James Johnston Esquire a Judge of the Supreme Court of our Colony of New Zealand this seventh day of August one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three
