  1. What is meant by an isthmus, a sea, an estuary, a tributary, longitude, meridian, the tropics?

  2. How many oceans are there? Where is each situated?

  3. Name the rivers of Europe, the mountains of Asia, the lakes of America, and six towns in Africa.

  4. Where in New Zealand are—Blenheim, Invercargill, Onehunga, Westport, Mount Cook, Mount Egmont, Hauraki Gulf, River Whanganui, and Great Barrier Island.

  5. Write a list of the British possessions in Asia and give the situation of each.

  6. Which towns of Europe are engaged in the manufacture of silk goods and which in the iron manufactures?

  7. Draw a map of Australia, marking the Colonies with the principal towns in each and the rivers.

  8. What do you know of the following:—Teneriffe, Jamaica, Rio Janeiro, Cotopaxi, Shanghae, the Irrawaddy, Brindisi, Torres Straits, Manchester, Sheffield, Dundee, Belfast, Chicago?

  9. If a line were drawn through Christchurch around the earth parallel to the Equator what places would it pass through or near? Suppose a similar line drawn round the earth through London what places would it pass through or very near?

  10. Write a short account of the Gulf Stream.

  4. Give the dates of accession of:—Stephen, Edward II., Richard II., Henry VIII., Charles II., Anne, George III., and William IV.

  5. Who were the following:—Anselm, Hubert de Burgh, Edward the Black Prince, Hotspur, Sir John Oldcastle, Cardinal Wolsey, Lady Jane Grey, Argyle and Monmouth (James II.), Marlborough, Sir Robert Peel, and Havelock.

  6. Write a short account of the war with France and Spain in the reign of Queen Anne, stating the object for which it was undertaken; or
    Write an account of the Indian Mutiny.

  7. What events happened in the following years:—1215, 1314, 1346, 1485, 1588, 1666, 1688, 1775, 1815, 1857?

  8. Give the principal provisions of “The Bill of Rights,” “Act of Settlement,” and “Habeas Corpus Act.”

  9. Who were the contracting parties and what were the objects of the following treaties:—Aix-la-Chapelle, Bretigny, and the Triple Alliance?
