CLASS B.

  1. Parse the nouns in the following passage, showing the number, gender, and case of each :-

    I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,
    From the seas and the streams ;
    I bear light shade for the leaves when laid
    In their noon-day dreams.
    From my wings are shaken the dews that waken
    The sweet birds every one,
    When rocked to rest on their mother’s breast,
    As she dances about the sun.
    I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
    And whiten the green plains under ;
    And then again I dissolve it in rain,
    And laugh as I pass in thunder.

  2. Pick out the verbs (including participles) from the foregoing passage, and say whether they are transitive or intransitive.

  3. Parse the verbs in the following sentences, showing the voice, mood, tense, number, and person of each :-

    I am ready. I was walking. He will be hurt. You may sing. Let him alone. Will you allow me to explain? They would have interrupted me.

  4. Decline the personal pronouns.

  5. Give rules for forming the plural, with an example of each rule.

  6. Give the abstract nouns which correspond to the following adjectives :—White, transparent, active, wise, poor, rich, desperate, horrid, secret.

  7. Write three sentences containing verbs in the active voice, and three containing verbs in the passive voice.

  8. Write not less than twenty lines on “Iron.”

  9. Write a passage dictated by the Examiner.

CLASS B.

  1. Explain the terms—Meridian, equator, zone, estuary, archipelago.

  2. Name the southern counties of England in order, from the North Foreland to the Land’s End, giving the chief town of each. Specify any important seaport or naval station.

  3. Write the names of the seas of Europe, and say what rivers fall into each.

  4. Describe as fully as you can a voyage from London to Calcutta, via the Cape of Good Hope.
