GRAMMAR.

Class A.

  1. Make a list of the nouns in the following lines, and mark the number, gender, and case of each of them:—

    Dwellers by lake and hill!
    Merry companions of the bird and bee!
    Go gladly forth and drink of joy your fill,
    With unconstrained step and spirits free.

  2. Make a list of the verbs in the following lines, and mark the voice, mood, tense, number, and person of each of them:—

    ‘Oh, Tiber, Father Tiber!
    To whom the Romans pray,
    A Roman’s life, a Roman’s arms,
    Take thou in charge this day!’
    So he spake, and speaking sheathed
    The good sword by his side,
    And with his harness on his back
    Plunged headlong in the tide.

  3. Write sentences containing the past tense and the past participle of each of the following verbs:—

    Bear (to carry), catch, choose, drink, forsake, rise.

  4. Form the plural of roof, box, loaf, strife, grief, lady, turkey, potato, woman.

  5. Form the possessive case of neighbour, neighbours, men, babies, fox, foxes.

  6. Give the comparative and superlative forms of bad, little, happy, hot, wide, famous.

  7. Write three sentences containing adverbs, and underline the adverbs; three sentences with prepositions underlined; and three sentences with conjunctions underlined.

  8. Write not less than fifteen lines on ‘Water.’ Be careful to use the stops correctly.

  9. Write a passage dictated by the Examiner.


GEOGRAPHY.

Class A.

  1. Explain the terms—Ocean, continent, cape, peninsula, strait. Write the names of the oceans and continents in the order of their size.

  2. What is meant by an isthmus? Name and describe the position of any isthmuses you remember.

  3. How is England separated from Ireland and from France? Mention and give the position of the principal English seaports. Whereabouts are Newcastle, Oxford, Glasgow, Belfast, and Cork, and for what are they remarkable?

  4. What islands or groups of islands are attached to England or Scotland? What islands in the West Indies belong to the British Empire?

  5. Describe the situation of the principal chain of mountains in Europe, Asia, and South America respectively, and give the names of the highest peaks in each.
