Writing.
Grammar.—As for the Third Class, with Analysis and Syntactical Parsing.
Arithmetic.—As for the Third Class, with Fractions (vulgar and decimal), Practice, Interest, Discount, &c., the elements of Book-keeping, and (for male teachers) Mensuration of surfaces and solids.
Geography.—Cornwell’s Geography, or an equivalent Text-book; Map-Drawing from memory.
History.—British and Sacred History.
Art of Teaching.—To Construct a Time Table; to Compose Notes of a Lesson; to show acquaintance with School Management. Knowledge of Drill will count.
Needlework.—As for Third Class.
Domestic Economy.—Finchley Manuals, or an equivalent. For Females only.
Music.—As for the Third Class.
Drawing.—As for the Third Class.
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS.
Mathematics.
- Algebra—To simple equations (simultaneous).
- Euclid—Three books.
- Mechanical and Natural Philosophy.
Physics.
- Mechanical and Natural Philosophy (Popular).
- Chemistry.
- Astronomy (Popular).
- Botany.
Languages.
- Latin—Grammar and Cæsar de Bello Gallico, or an equivalent.
- French.
- German.
History.
- Grecian and Roman History (outline).
- European History.—Collier’s Great Events, or an equivalent.
(3) FOR A CERTIFICATE OF THE FIRST CLASS.
ESSENTIAL SUBJECTS AS FOR THE SECOND CLASS,
with
Latin.—Grammar; prose composition; any two books (one prose and one poetry) selected at the option of the candidate from the higher authors.
Euclid.—Books I.—IV., and VI.
Algebra.—To quadratic equations.
English Language and Literature.
Females will be at liberty to substitute French or German for Latin; and in Mathematics will be required to bring up two Books of Euclid, and Algebra to Simple Equations.
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS.
Mathematics.
- Trigonometry.—To solution of plane triangles.
- Mechanical and Natural Philosophy.—Including, Statics, Dynamics, Hydrostatics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Optics.
