BOARD OF EDUCATION.
REPORT OF EXAMINERS OF THE CANDIDATES FOR PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS.
Christchurch, June 16, 1873.
TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Sir,
We have the honour to report that we have examined the candidates for Provincial Government Scholarships—Classes A, B, and C—on the 4th and 5th instant, and Class D on the 11th, 12th, and 13th instant. The numbers examined were 24 in Class A, 24 in B, 39 in C, and 6 in D. The examination was conducted by written papers, copies of which we enclose.
The accompanying tabular statements show the number of marks obtained by each boy under each head, and in the total. In Class A, Robison is first, and Whitelaw second, with 381 and 343 marks, respectively; while Partridge and Wake (332 and 331) are not far behind Whitelaw.
In Class B, Bridge obtains first place by a majority of 52 marks over Shirtcliff, who takes the second place. Cohen and Johnston are equal for third place, with Hartland and Sword, who are also equal, only five marks below them, Hartland, however, falling below the minimum in History.
In Class C, there is a tie between Connal and W. H. Smith for the first place, and the third place is equally contested by Barclay, Bird, and Hay. It may also be noticed that Armitage, Wedge, and Innes have obtained more than 300 marks each out of 550.
In Class D, Herbert is easily first, and Douglas is considerably above any of the rest.
It appears unnecessary to enter into further detail, as the tables supply full information; but we may remark that, as on former occasions, many boys have been sent in for examination who had no chance of acquitting themselves creditably.
We have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servants,
WM. JAS. HABENS, B.A.,
