✨ Inspector's Report on Schools
849
Selwyn ... Nov. 16 ... Present 34 ... New school,
30 x 18, opened on October 9th. The dimensions, design, and defects of the
room and the desks are similar to those of the Weedon school. The school in
good order and making fair progress.
Killinchy ... Nov. 17 ... Present 34 ... Satisfactory.
Prebbleton ... Nov. 22 ... Present 27 ...
The attendance is small; but the attainments are creditable. The geography of two elder
boys remarkably comprehensive and correct.
West Melton ... Nov. 23 (New school commenced on October 23)
Present 32. In good order. The design good, same as Weeden and Selwyn, but
the work better executed, better material having been used. The desks are too
short as at Weeden and Selwyn; there are at present only six instead of nine
desks; the defective length can be made up in the new desks.
Halkett ... Nov. 23 (showery day) ... Present 22.
Average attendance last week 32; on roll, 38. The register very neat, but
inaccurate. The desks disarranged awkwardly, the central position of the stove
being the chief excuse. The attainments of those present were satisfactory and
in some respects particularly creditable.
South Selwyn ... Nov. 29 ... Present 58 ...
The school appears crowded with this number, although the capacity at 9 sq. feet per average
attendant is nearly equal to it. The school has considerably increased in attendance and efficiency; rather too much of each subject has, however, been attempted,
and, consequently, a little inaccuracy prevails. Some defects as to the premises
are stated on the form of report.
Southbridge ... Nov. 30 ... Present 43 ... Satisfactory.
Leeston ... Dec. 1 ... Present 55 ...
The dimensions of the room are equivalent to the number, at 9 sq. feet per average attendant;
but, nevertheless, the room is inconveniently crowded. The master, having
for years been accustomed to a badly arranged room elsewhere, has disarranged
the desks so that the scholars, having their backs to the teacher, face close against
the windows and walls in every direction. The school is otherwise in good order;
the progress, on the whole, satisfactory; but the scholars have suffered from want
of books for long intervals, from the scarcity of supply at the depôt. Some new
maps—Europe, England, Australia, and New Zealand are wanted.
The arrangement and dimensions of desks, and their capricious disarrangement appear
to require consideration.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
