BOARD OF EDUCATION,

FOR THE

PERIOD ENDING SEPTEMBER 30, 1871.

To His Honor The Superintendent.

Sir,

The Board of Education, in accordance with the provisions of "The Education Ordinance, 1871," has the honour to present its Report for the period ending the 30th September, 1871, the last Annual Report containing complete Statistical information up to the 31st December, 1870.

The total number of schools receiving aid from the Board during the above-mentioned period was 68.

In addition to these, two Superior Schools are in receipt of Government assistance.

The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings (depicted) were constructed between 1858 and 1865 and are the only purpose-built provincial government buildings in New Zealand still in existence.
