JAMES P. JAMESON,
Mayor.

City Council Chamber,
15th September, 1871.

PROCLAMATION.

WHEREAS by an Ordinance enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, Session VII., No. 7, intituled "An Ordinance for the Regulation of Prisons," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for His Excellency the Governor, from time to time, as to him shall seem meet, by Proclamation, to declare any house, building, enclosure, or place to be a public gaol; and after the publication of any such Proclamation, such house, building, enclosure, or place shall be deemed and taken to be a Public Gaol.

And whereas by an Ordinance of the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury, intituled "The Empowering Ordinance, Session II., No. 2," it is enacted that the powers conferred on the Governors of New Zealand by the above recited Ordinance are within the limits of the Province of Canterbury conferred on the Superintendent thereof.
