β¨ Education Report
168:
It will be seen from the Tabular Summary that the number of attendants has been 5571, an increase of 627 upon the corresponding quarter of last year. The average daily attendance has been 2342; an increase of 389. The amount of school fees has been Β£994 7s. 2d., an increase of Β£111 12s. 9d.
This quarter usually proves very unsuitable for school examinations; the town schools have had Christmas holidays; the country schools have been interrupted by the protracted harvest; an unusually wet season has also affected the attendance, and rendered the schools still more ineligible for examination.
The Quarterly Report, comprising Quarterly and Annual Statistics, has been prepared, but its completion has been hindered by the numerous holidays delaying the forwarding and the correction of the information from some of the schools.
Prizes for good conduct and diligence have been selected and awarded by the Board to scholars, who, besides being regular in their attendance, have distinguished themselves at each examination during the year.
The Government Scholars holding Junior Scholarships awarded to boys under eleven years of age, have been carefully examined as to their progress, and a special report comprising full details has been submitted to the Board.
Twelve candidates for appointments as teachers, masters, or mistresses, have been examined.
One candidate for a pupil-teachership has also been examined, and has shown great aptitude for the appointment; but nothing has yet been finally decided about him.
Some of the candidates for masterships who fail to pass the examination, but yet show either some previous experience or some aptitude for the work, are desirous of qualifying themselves for it. Assistance from the Board in the cost of their training may result in providing an eligible class of masters.
I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
