Education Inspector's Report

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(FEBRUARY 24—MARCH 30, 1870)

INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.

To the Chairman of the Board.

Sir,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools Examined during the month.

The continuous wet weather has been very unfavourable to the attendance at most of the schools; the following have, however, been examined.

Harewood Road School ... March 6 ... Present 17 ... The progress is, on the whole, satisfactory; the details are entered on the form of report annexed. Books, an easel, and maps are wanted.

St. Luke’s School ... March 8 ... Present 83 ... The progress and the improved efficiency of the school are highly commendable. The master has been educated in Canterbury, and gives fair promise of being one of our most efficient schoolmasters.

Christchurch Wesleyan School ... March 9, 10 ... Present 120 ... The organisation, discipline, and general results are satisfactory. The details are stated in the form of report annexed.

Kaiapoi Wesleyan School ... March 13 ... Present 77 ... The results are generally satisfactory, although less so in the lower classes.

Lyttelton Church of England School ... March 14 ... Present 58 ... The attendance and the efficiency of the school are improving; the neatness and order are especially commendable. Details are stated in the form of report. The neatness of the latter, filled up by the master, is exemplary.

Lyttelton Wesleyan School ... March 15 ... Present 59 ... The order is remarkably good—the room and the children very clean and neat. The school is carefully and successfully taught; the attainments, moderate, are judiciously adapted to the capacity of the children. The fluency and expression of the reading, even in the lower classes, is particularly worthy of commendation.

Lyttelton High School ... March 16, 17 ... Present 56 ... The attendance has fallen off. Not taking into account the few who are studying some higher subjects, the proficiency and accuracy in the ordinary branches are scarcely up to the standard of former years, yet somewhat in advance of the standard of the neighbouring schools; the average age in this being higher than in those schools.

St. Michael’s School, Christchurch ... March 20 ... Present 58 ... The present low standard of accuracy in the whole school may be excusable on account of the short time the teachers have held office. Details are stated on the form of report.
