BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(JANUARY 1—26, 1871.)
INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.
To THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD,
Sir,
I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools and Candidates Examined during the month.
In the School Examinations the Board’s Tabular Form of Report has been brought into use; the Forms containing detailed information are appended; duplicates of the Form of Report have been supplied to the Chairman of the Local Committee of each School Examined. The use of the Form and the requirement of a programme of the work gone over will tend to systematize the course of instruction in each school.
SCHOOLS EXAMINED.
Broadfield ... Jan. 10 ... Present 30 ... The attendance has not increased in a similar ratio with that of the neighbouring schools. The reading and spelling are unsatisfactory.
South Selwyn School ... Jan. 11 ... Present 39 ... The classification and attainments are at present imperfect, this being the first examination of the school under the new master. There is fair ground for expecting satisfactory results by next examination.
Southbridge ... Jan. 12 ... Present 63 ... The superior efficiency of the school is highly commendable.
Leeston ... Jan. 18 ... Present 44 ... Satisfactory; allowance being made for the interval between the change of masters.
Templeton ... Jan. 19 ... Present 57 ... The enlargement of the school to one-half more than its present size, and the appointment of a permanent assistant, will be requisite if the present attendance can be kept up; but the average of the harvest quarter of last year was one-half of that of the previous one; in fact, the attendance from October to harvest nearly doubles that of the rest of the year. A new black board and some more desks and forms are wanted. The neatness and order are excellent. The standard of attainment and the amount of accuracy are inferior; but this deficiency is sufficiently accounted for by the large number of children under one teacher during the past three months.
Halswell ... Jan. 20 ... Present 37 ... The porch has been removed to the north end, and other beneficial alterations and repairs have been effected. Discipline, fair; registers, satisfactory. The regularity of attendance in each class is superior, according to the information supplied by the
