School Inspection Reports

xxxv.

Hororata ...... Oct. 17 ... Present 25 ...

The progress since last examination is satisfactory. The local interest in the school was evinced by a large attendance of the committee and parents.

Courtenay ...... Oct. 18 ... Present 16 ... New teacher.

Satisfactory.

Halkett ...... Oct. 19 ... Present 25 ... New school.

New teacher. The building and premises satisfactory. The school in excellent order; the attainments, fair, although very elementary at present.

Prebbleton ...... Oct. 20 ... Present 32 ...

The school in excellent order; there is considerable and satisfactory improvement since last examination.

Templeton ...... Oct. 21 ... Present 53 ... The fees—6d.

a-week instead of 1s.—secure a larger attendance than where the higher fee prevails. A larger room and more desks will be requisite if the present attendance can be kept up. The register had been filled up in the morning for the afternoon also, regardless of a truthful result. The school was in good order. The copybooks remarkably clean and neat, but—mostly too difficult for the children using them—had been obtained more with regard to the teacher’s convenience in their purchase, than as to their suitableness to the children’s requirements; many of those writing more advanced copies were more fitted to be learning the shape of the letters. The attainments were, on the whole, as satisfactory as might be expected for so large a number under one teacher; temporary assistance is very requisite until the harvest holidays. The attendance at the examination was nearly double of the average for the three previous quarters of the year.

Four candidates for Masterships have been examined during the month—one on the 30th September, and three on the 24th inst.—one of these, Joseph Hutt, has obtained a certificate of fitness for the Mastership of the Addington School; another, John Maddison, has obtained a certificate of fitness for the Mastership of a small Country School of about twenty scholars; the other two candidates, each in his turn offering himself for the Duvauchelles Bay School, have failed to obtain certificates,—a few months’ preparation in either case would fit them for an appointment. One of them is, I believe, studying under and assisting a highly qualified master. Few of the unsuccessful candidates can, however, find such an opportunity, if even they can afford to adopt it when occurring. One or more successful candidates have benefited by preparation under the training of a skilful and experienced teacher.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,

Inspector of Schools.
