Education Inspection Report

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(SEPTEMBER 30—OCTOBER 27, 1870.)

INSPECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT.

TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.

Sir,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools Examined during the month.

Upper Heathcote School ... Oct. 7 ... Present 26 ... There is considerable improvement since last examination in all except the writing, which is not efficiently taught.

Halswell ... Oct. 7, 10 ... Present 42 i.e. ten more than the average for the previous part of the year. The register is neat, and has been made up to the end of last quarter, but the half days have been reckoned as whole days. The organisation is defective in the lower part of the school, split up into four classes of not more than thirteen children in all, the two highest comprising twenty-nine. The discipline and smartness of the first—or highest—class indicate the pains taken in their instruction; their reading and writing have improved; their mental arithmetic is uncommonly good. The second class’ attainments are satisfactory except as to the reading and the slate arithmetic. The lower classes are unusually backward and irregular; their deficiency and irregularity indicate the want of a permanent and competent assistant, provided that the attendance can be kept up to the present number.

Lincoln ... Oct. 12; very wet day. Present 25 ... The registers are very neat and complete; the school has acquired a superior standard of efficiency.

Springston ... Oct. 13 ... Present 32 ... The very favourable report of the July examination was fully borne out also on the present occasion.

Broadfield ... Oct. 14 ... Present 45 ... This attendance is fifty per cent. more than for the three previous quarters of this year; if it could be kept up, a permanent assistant would be necessary—a temporary one is, however, desirable. It may be partly owing to the sudden and large increase that the school passed a much less satisfactory examination than in July last, when it was highly commended. The teacher is attentive to suggestions; the defects were, therefore, sufficiently indicated on the day of examination.
