Education Inspector's Report

xxvii.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

(OCTOBER 29—NOV. 25, 1869.)

INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.

To the Chairman of the Board.

Sir,

I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the schools inspected and examined during the month.

Leithfield ... Nov. 1 ... Present 32 ... Improving.

North Kowai ... Nov. 2 (wet day) ... Present 12 ... New school, without register or apparatus; may be said to have hardly commenced. The ventilators do not close; the same defect being frequently observable in new schools, it may be desirable to insist on provision for closing the ventilators in future, both in the plans and their fulfilment. The room is well built, and is lined from the floor to the roof; but there is no fireplace. The day was wet and cold; but the inmates did not appear to suffer.

Mount Grey Downs ... Nov. 3 ... Present 25 ... Satisfactory. The desks are more suitably arranged; the progress indicates great care; the copybooks are remarkably neat and well written.

Saltwater Creek ... Same day ... Present 28 ... Satisfactory. The school in excellent order; the children carefully taught.

Loburn ... Nov. 4 ... Present 32 ... Improving; but the Spelling, Writing and Arithmetic are, as yet, very moderate.

Ashley Bank ... Same day ... Present 18 ... Satisfactory.

Flaxton ... Nov. 5 ... Present 26 ... Improving.

Papanui, Wesleyan ... Nov. 8 ... Present 48 ... The discipline and control are weak; the progress of the upper classes is unsatisfactory; the head boy is doing no good here.

Heathcote Valley ... Nov. 10 ... Present 46 ... Improving.

St. Albans ... Nov. 12 ... (Wet day) ... Too few for examination. Postponed until the 26th instant.

Rangiora Girls’ ... Nov. 15 ... Present 52 ... Satisfactory.

Rangiora Boys’ ... Nov. 16 (wet day) ... Present 45 ... Satisfactory.

Cust School ... Nov. 17 ... Present 48 ... Satisfactory.

Oxford School ... Same day ... Present 84 ... The attainments very moderate; the progress slow.
