Lyttelton Church School ... August 24 ... Present 52 ... The organization, discipline, attendance, and attainments, are considerably improved; and there is a fair promise of further improvement.
Maurice H. Berkely, Candidate for the Mastership of the St. Luke’s School, passed his examination very satisfactorily on the 23rd instant, and has obtained a certificate of fitness for the Mastership of an “Ordinary School.”
The Upper Heathcote School was visited in passing, on the 10th instant. Present 40; organization and discipline much improved; the school in good working order.
The Halswell School, similarly visited on the same day, present 34, also presented a generally satisfactory appearance.

TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
SIR,
I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the schools examined during the month.
St. Paul’s, Papanui ... August 27 ... Present 93 ... Very creditable.
Governor’s Bay ... August 30 ... Present 9 ... Satisfactory. The Bible knowledge, remarkably accurate, and every subject well taught.
Governor’s Bay North ... August 31 ... Present 19 ... The attendance is below former averages. The attainments are very creditable.
Upper Heathcote ... September 1 ... Present 40 ... The attendance and efficiency are considerably improved.
Avonside ... September 2 ... Present 44 ... The school has suffered from the illness and absence of the assistant mistress. There is considerable improvement in the order and efficiency, but the children are still very backward, many of them are shamefully ignorant of the plainest truths of Old and New Testament History.
