for Writing were awarded conjointly by the Examiners. As a whole, the papers which I inspected were very creditable to the candidates; but, as you will see by the annexed table, Bean has far outstripped all his opponents, and deserves much praise for his correct, clean, and well-written papers. Great credit is due to Bird and Connal, two very young boys; and, in Geography, I would wish to make special mention of Ross (another very young candidate), who, although low in the list, evinced much talent and great perseverance. In this subject, I framed my questions chiefly to test the knowledge of the candidates of their mother and adopted countries, and am glad to state that their acquaintance with the history and general features of the latter is much greater than has been shewn on any previous examination.
Expressing my earnest wish that these scholarships may become an institution independent of any vote of the Provincial Council.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your humble obedient servant,
JAS. GEO. HAWKES.
