INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
TO THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD.
Sir,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined during the month.
Broadfields School ... January 11 ... Present 23 ... The desks are better arranged than in October last. The organization and discipline are improved. The progress of the pupils is very creditable.
Southbridge School ... January 12 ... Present 27 ... The site is a good selection. It is well fenced by a sod wall and a ditch. The exposed situation requires the shelter of a live fence and trees. The buildings are well finished and painted. The School-room is of sufficient height; it is provided with suitable means of light, warmth, and ventilation. The premises are in excellent order. A well has been sunk. The books, apparatus, and fittings are, on the whole, satisfactory, and sufficient for the present requirements, but the desks are ill-contrived and unsuitable, some as to steadiness, others as to height, and in other respects. The Chairman of the Local Committee has taken notes of the proper height, dimensions, and arrangement of suitable desks. The School is commencing satisfactorily under a trained Teacher of considerable experience. It was very satisfactory to observe that the education of the children had been cared for before the establishment of a School; their attainments were so far very creditable.
South Selwyn School ... January 13 ... Present 14 ... Seven of whom came at and after ten o’clock. Allowing a quarter of an hour for difference of time, in a very out of the way district, there were 11 present at ten o’clock. There is some but not a satisfactory improvement in cleanliness, neatness, and order since last examination. The exemplary state of the Springston, Leeston, Southbridge, and other neighbouring Schools, cannot be expected from this School with its inferior
