BOARD OF EDUCATION.
(SEPTEMBER 25,—OCTOBER 29, 1868.)
INSPECTOR’S MONTHLY REPORT.
To the Hon. H. J. Tancred, Chairman.
Sir,—I have the honour to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined during the month, including Special Reports on the “Addington School” and the proposed Broadfield School; also to report the examination of Alfred S. White, candidate for the Mastership of the Mount Grey Downs School.
The Akaroa School had been closed for some time previous to the intended examination, owing to serious ill-health of the Master, now recovering. (Oct. 1st.)
OF THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED:—
Duvauchelle’s Bay ... October 6 ... Present, 24 ... Much Improved.
Okain’s Bay ... October 6 ... Present, 36 ... Very Satisfactory.
Besides a sound knowledge of the Bible and of general rudiments, the attainments comprise a fair general knowledge of English History, Grammar and Geography, including that of New Zealand. More than half the School have a general knowledge of arithmetic, varying from the compound rules to cube root. The expertness in mental arithmetic is remarkable. The elder pupils are instructed in higher subjects without any neglect of the younger or less advanced children.
Little Akaloa School ... October 7 ... Present, 20 ... Improving under the new Teacher. The attainments also reflecting great credit upon the late Master, now conducting the Springston School.
Pigeon Bay School ... October 8 ... Present, 28 ... The satisfactory attainments are fairly proportioned to the regularity of attendance. The School was merely visited en route and unexpectedly. It presented its ordinary satisfactory appearance as to attendance and order. The English grammar is particularly commendable both for the rational manner in which it is taught, and for the intelligence and accuracy of a large and mixed class of pupils.
Addington School ... October 9 ... Present, 35 ... Special Report.
North Road School ... October 12 ... Present, 17 ... Re-commencing under a new Teacher, the building and premises being now in better order.
St. Albans School ... October 13 ... Present, 50 ... Improving.
Templeton School ... October 10 ... Present, 24 ... The building requires the shelter of trees. The brickwork of the chimney has been loosened by a recent gale. The gaps, in the lining of the room, required to be stopped. The draft at the southerly end rendered it necessary to remove some children from their ordinary seats. The attainments of the children and the improved order of the room are satisfactory.
Broadfields School ... October 12 ... Present, 32 ... Special Report.
Springston School ... October 20 ... Present, 25 ... The School has recently opened. The buildings have a warm aspect; they are remarkably well planned, built and finished; at a comparatively low cost. The dwelling is a superior one and well fitted for a teacher’s residence. The schoolroom is well arranged and supplied. The ventilators will require shutters in the winter and in stormy weather.
