✨ Meteorological Observations

REMARKS.

The Observations at Bealey have been taken by J. M. Munre, Esq., Telegraph Manager; those at Hokitika by J. Hochfort, Esq., County Engineer.

The results obtained from the self-registering exposed thermometers at Christchurch have not been compared with those obtained during previous years, as more sensitive instruments are now in use. A black bulb solar radiation thermometer, insulated in vacuo, and a minimum thermometer, suspended over a metal disc, for terrestrial radiation, have been the instruments from which observations have been taken during the past year. This fact also must be taken into consideration when comparing the results obtained from the exposed thermometers at Hokitika and Bealey with similar observations at Christchurch, the old description of instrument being still in use at the two former places.

The amount of spontaneous evaporation at Christchurch during the year was as follows:β€”

January ... 6.553 inches.
February ... 4.994 "
March ... 3.666 "
April ... 2.474 "
May ... 1.000 "
June ... 0.614 "
July ... 0.788 "
August ... 1.165 "
September ... 2.00 "
October ... 4.110 "
November ... 6.282 "
December ... 8.580 "

Total ... 42.226 inches.
Total evaporation for 1867 ... 49.008 "

A severe shock of earthquake was felt on August 17, at 9.59 a.m.; another was felt on October 19, at 0.13 a.m.; and a third of a milder description on December 26.
