TIMARU NEW HARBOUR LIGHT.

THE Provincial Government of Canterbury hereby notify that on and after Friday, January 1, 1869, a Light will be exhibited from the Government Flagstaff at Timaru.

The Light will be a Fixed Red and Bright Light. It will be elevated 50 feet above the mean level of the sea, and in clear weather should be seen at a distance of five miles. The Light will be Red to seaward, and Bright either to the north or south, and the following directions are published for the guidance of masters frequenting the above roadstead:—

“Vessels from the southward, after rounding Patiti Point, about two miles off shore, will bring the Bright Light bearing N.W. magnetic, and should then steer N. half W. until they open out the Red Light bearing W.S.W., then steer W.S.W., and anchor in 4½ fathoms about ¼ mile off shore.

“Vessels from the north must not open the Bright Light of the Red to the northward, but on sighting the Red Light, steer W.S.W., and anchor as directed above.”
