gales; but on the 29th 451 miles of wind passed the station when a strong north-east wind blew day and night without ceasing. The highest temperature in the shade was 78.0 on the 14th; the lowest 39.4 on the 16th; range 38.6. There was slight frost on four nights. The mean temperature of the month 58.1 was slightly above the average which is 57.7. The rainfall was 0.55 inches below the mean. Spontaneous evaporation 3.666 inches. Mean direction of the wind west north-west.

Hokitika.

A moderately fine month, more or less rain fell on sixteen days; greatest fall 1.87 inches on the 25th. No high winds or thunder storms. Fog prevailed on the 3rd.

11th, 25th, and 26th. Mean direction of the wind south-east by south. Total rainfall from January 1st to March 31, 29.55 inches on 51 days.

Bealey.

Weather remarkably fine and dry from the 1st to the 13th; but with gales from north-west, on the 2nd, 6th, 9th, 10th, and 13th. On the 14th the weather broke and continued very unsettled until the 26th, more or less rain falling each day in that period. The heaviest rainfall occurred on the 17th when 1.32 inches were collected. There was a thunder storm on the 22nd, and gales of wind on the 17th and 20th. The last four days in the month were again beautifully fine and clear; thirteen nights in the month were frosty. Mean direction of the wind north-west by west. Total rainfall from January 1st to March 31, 28.41 inches on 45 days.
