Education Reports

One black board

Two maps

One set of reading tablets

A sufficiency of books, slates, &c., for present use.

The attainments of the children are quite elementary; but show results of careful teaching during the six months the school has been at work.

The building is fit for use as a school; the teacher is competent for her work; the school, a dame-school, has been much wanted in the district.

BOARD OF EDUCATION,

Quarter ending December 31, 1867.

QUARTERLY REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.

To the Honorable H. J. Tancred, Chairman.

Sir,—I have the honour, in obedience to your instructions, to submit Tabular Summaries of the Quarterly and Annual returns as to attendance and payment, and a Schedule as to the efficiency of the Schools Examined.

I have also annexed a Schedule, showing the number of scholars with reference to their age, sex, and attainments, and adapted to the requirements of the General Government.

It will be seen from the Tabular Summary of Quarterly Returns, that during the quarter the number of attendants has been 2815, an increase of 443 upon the corresponding quarter of 1866.

The average attendance 1950, an increase of 318.

The gross increase is at 19 instead of 15 per cent., as compared with last year.

The average increase is 16 per cent., i.e., at the same rate as last year.

That it is not greater, may probably be due to an unusually wet season; and to the prevalence of measles in some districts.

The amount of school fees is £1000 17s, an increase of £175 16s 9d.

It will be seen from the schedule as to the efficiency, that the number of schools examined has been 40, including 1724 children.

The schools more especially commended for steady efficiency throughout the year are the—

Pigeon Bay, Academy
Okain’s Bay School
Christchurch Wesleyan School
Papanui St. Paul’s
Kaiapoi Church of England
Lyttelton Church of England
Rangiora Boys’
Christchurch St. Michael’s
„ St. Andrew’s
„ Roman Catholic
Lyttelton Wesleyan School.

The above list is, as nearly as can be, in the order of merit, and identical with several numerical tests of accuracy during the year.
