Rainfall at Lyttelton in November, 3.735 inches on thirteen days (Capt. F. D. Gibson).

clearly on the 3rd, when the temperature rose to 85°.7, a figure which was exceeded only once all last summer. Hard north-westerly gales blew on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 11th, always with a clear sky over the plains; these winds, as usual, causing enormous evaporation, which, in the month, amounted to 8.427 inches—relative humidity fell as low as 38 on the 3rd. The nights during this period were in general calm and cool; the daily range of temperature was therefore very great, averaging 27°.0; on the 3rd it was 85°.4. On the night of the 12th there was a sharp frost (23°.0), which did considerable injury to some of the crops; and on the morning of the 15th occurred a tremendously heavy fall of rain—in fifteen minutes 480 inches were collected, followed by a very wet night, during which another inch of rain fell. Several very pleasant days of calm sunshine then succeeded; but on the night of the 23rd heavy rain, with some hail at first, set in from the south-west, followed by a gale from the same quarter on the day after, and cold wet weather prevailed generally until the 28th. On the morning of the 24th the barometer fell to 28.686 (corrected and reduced to 32° Fah. at sea level), the lowest yet registered at this station in four years. It was again stormy from the south-west on the 28th, dry in the day-time, but with showers of rain and hail at night, afterwards a slight frost. Two very fine, almost cloudless days, closed the month. The mean temperature for the first ten days in the month was 63°.4, for the last ten days 51°.8; but the mean for the whole month was about the average, namely, 56°.8 against 57°.4. The rainfall was far above the mean—4.424 inches on thirteen days, compared to 1.381 on nine days.

Mean direction of the wind, N.E. by E. Sheet lightning was seen on the night of the 4th, towards the interior. The exposed thermometer on grass fell below freezing point on seven nights.

At Godley Head Lighthouse Mr. Chapman reports snow having fallen there, and on the higher parts of Banks’ Peninsula on the 24th and 26th.

Rainfall at Christchurch, from January 1 to November 30 each year, as follows:—

HOKITIKA.
A very unsettled month. Rain fell on twenty-three days, though many of these were only showery, or the rain fell in the night-time. Total amount, 15.00 inches. There were thunder-storms, with gales of wind, on the 4th, 7th, and 22nd; also, a thunder-storm on the 15th, and a gale from the south-west on the 28th. Hail fell on the 22nd, and fog prevailed on the 4th, 22nd, and 23rd. On one night only the exposed thermometer fell below freezing point, namely, to 30° on the 28th. The mean amount of cloud was very great, 7.9 compared to 4.4 at Christchurch. The mean temperature of the month (52.3) was 4°.5 below Christchurch. Barometer range, 1.246. Mean direction of the wind, W.N.W.

Rainfall from January 1 to November 30, 96.05 inches on 172 days, against 129.12 inches on 213 days during the same period in 1866.

BERLEY.
A very wet and cold month. More or less rain fell on twenty-seven days, equal to 15.00 inches in depth. Snow fell on the 22nd, 26th, 28th, and 29th, and hail on the 11th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd. There were thunder-storms on the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, and 22nd; and gales of wind, always from the north-west, on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 22nd, and 23rd. There were twenty nights in which the exposed thermometer fell below freezing point; the 12th, in particular, was a very cold night, when that instrument registered 12°.5 Fah.

The mean temperature of the month was 46°.6, or 10°.2 below Christchurch; and many of the other results contained in the above table show a very remarkable contrast. Mean direction of the wind, N.W.
