ADDRESS OF HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT,
ON
PROROGUING THE PROVINCIAL COUNCIL, APRIL 9, 1868.
Mr. Speaker and Gentlemen of the Provincial Council—
In relieving you from your labours, I have to express my thanks for the careful consideration which you have given to the various measures submitted to you during the present session. The supplies which you have voted for the public service shall be administered with the strictest regard to economy, and in accordance with the votes of the Council.
I cordially concur with the address which you have adopted for presentation to Her Majesty the Queen, and I will have great pleasure in forwarding it to His Excellency the Governor for transmission to Her Majesty.
The Government fully recognise the imminent danger to Christchurch and surrounding districts from the overflow of the Waimakariri, and will urge on the General Government the necessity of passing a Bill through the Assembly for giving effect to your resolutions on the subject.
