Rainfall from January 1 to September 30 each year, as follows:—

Hokitika.

At the West Coast also the weather was remarkably fine during the month of September. There were slight thunder storms on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th, the only atmospheric disturbances worth recording. The rainfall was far below any month registered there, only 1.88 inches, which fell mostly in showers on 10 different days; the heaviest daily fall being 0.74 inches on the 10th. There were no high winds, the greatest velocity in one day was 187 miles, on the 6th. The mean temperature of the month, 57°.6, was 1°.4 higher than at Christchurch. Number of frosty nights, 7. Total range of temperature, 35°.5, or from 67°.0 to 31°.5. Mean direction of the wind, N.W. by W.

Rainfall from January 1 to September 30, 58.27 inches on 122 days, against 90.81 inches on 152 days, during the same period in the year 1866.
