Okain Bay School ... Feb. 14 ... Present 27.—A very satisfactory school.
Duvanehelle Bay School ... Feb. 18 ... Present 27.—The attainments of the children were on the whole satisfactory; the attendance of girls much decreased shews the want of a female teacher. Other matters relating to this school will be brought before the notice of the Board by correspondence of Local Committee and others.
Little Akaloa ... Feb. 15 ... Present 20.—The teacher appears to be earnest and attentive, and the children have made some progress under him, except in arithmetic in which they were slow and inaccurate.
Lyttelton Church School ... Feb. 20 ... Present 60.—The lower classes seem to get on slowly, and they contain several big backward children.
Papanui Wesleyan School ... Feb. 21 ... Present 27.—New teacher.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.
SUMMARY REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS FOR THE MONTH.
(March 1—28.)
To the Honorable H. J. TANCRED, Chairman.
Sir,—I have the honor to submit a Summary Report on the Schools examined during the month.
Twenty-one schools, including 546 children, have been examined, as follows:—
Riccarton ... March 1 ... Present 30.—Improving.
Harewood Road ... ,, 1 ... ,, 11.—Satisfactory.
Leithfield School ... ,, 4 ... ,, 11.—Satisfactory.
Saltwater Creek ... ,, 4 ... ,, 15.—Satisfactory except as to the arithmetic; the spelling very good.
Woodend School ... March 5 ... ,, 29.—Satisfactory; the junior classes have made a marked improvement.
Kaiapoi Church School ... March 6 ... ,, 39.—Very satisfactory. The junior classes are remarkably accurate in elementary knowledge; children of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 years of age answer better in Bible knowledge, spelling and tables, and read words of two or three syllables better than in the generality of schools. Great credit is due to Mr. and Mrs. Matthews for the steady efficiency of the school.
Kaiapoi Wesleyan School ... March 6 ... Present 23.—Middling. The discipline is weak; the standard of attainment and accuracy below the average.
Avonside ... March 7 ... Present 40.—This school is steadily improving under the new master Mr. F. William Thompson.
St. Albans ... March 8 ... Present 71.—The organization of the whole school is much improved, especially as to a better arrangement of the desks and the classification of the children. The efficiency, and, consequently, the attendance are increasing.
