INSPECTOR'S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.

(JUNE 29—JULY 26.)

To the Honorable H. J. TANCRED, Chairman.

Sir,—I have the honour, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a summary report on the schools examined, and other business transacted during the month.

Five schools, including 129 children, have been examined.

Three candidates for appointments to schools have been examined, as per special reports and certificates.

Arthur Edwin Poore, for the Fernside school,
David A. Borthwick, for the Lyttelton Wesleyan school.
Robert Thomson, for the Prebbleton school.

Thirty-two different requisitions for supplies from the Educational Depot have been satisfied, the amounts varying from 7d. to £19 18s., and the whole amounting to £76 10s. 8d.

OF THE SCHOOLS EXAMINED :—

Lower Heathcote School, ... July 16, ... Present 36 ... Satisfactory as to organization, discipline, and attainments. The school-room and dwelling are well-built and finished, the school-room lofty, well aired and lighted. The ventilators in the gables of the roof cannot be closed; this cause, and an extra and unnecessary door, keep the room very cold in winter. The porch is at the eastward corner of the room, and open towards the south-west; it would have been better placed at the other door and open in the opposite direction.

North Road School, ... July 18, ... Present 20 ... Moderate.

Harewood Road ,, ... ,, 12, ... ,, 17 ... Satisfactory.

St. Alban’s ,, ... ,, 20, ... ,, 32 ... Satisfactory as to the infant or junior classes under the mistress; the elder classes were absent on account of the severe indisposition of the master.

Papanui Wesleyan school, ... July 23, ... Present 24... Creditable Improvement generally; the arithmetic less satisfactory than the other subjects.

The details of each examination are entered in the Journal.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant,

J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.
