Fittings and School Furniture.—There are none belonging to the school; the borrowed forms are unsuitable in height and length; desks, unsuitable, insufficient and badly placed right against windows and wall.

  1. The Organization and Discipline are as good as the above circumstances permit. The teacher appears to be skilful and painstaking. The school is not re-arranged after Sunday services. A ladder and lumber are left in the room.

6, 7, 8. A course of instruction in Biblical and Secular knowledge has been commenced. No writing is taught yet for want of proper desks.

NOTE.—School hours 9, 12, 2, 3. School-fees 12s., 14s., or 16s. per quarter. It is at present supposed that the School Committee will collect these in arrear.

SPECIAL REPORT AFTER PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION ON CANDIDATES FOR JUNIOR SCHOLARSHIPS.

Twenty-two candidates have offered to compete for the four Junior Scholarships to be awarded by the Board.

They are from the following Ordinary Schools:—

From St. Paul’s, Papanui .................................. Six Candidates
” Christchurch Wesleyan .......................... Four ”
” Halswell .................................................. Two ”
” Woodend .................................................. ” ”
” Lyttelton Church of England .................. ” ”
” Christchurch Roman Catholic ............... One ”
” St. Luke’s .................................................. ” ”
” St. Michael’s ............................................. ” ”
” Rangiora .................................................... ” ”
” Ashley Bank .............................................. ” ”
” Upper Heathcote ...................................... ” ”

Two of the candidates appear to be above the limited age of 11 years, viz:—

From the Christchurch Wesleyan School—
Thomas W. Ambrose, aged 11 in May, 1866.

From the Woodend School—
Robert Booth, aged 11 in May, 1866.

One also from the Christchurch Wesleyan School—
John Jones will be 11 on the 26th June, 1866.

I have not, however, declined to take the preliminary examination of the three candidates above referred to.

I have gone through the papers of the several candidates and assigned marks according to their relative proficiency in each subject.

And it appears to me that if T. W. Ambrose and Robert Booth are disqualified by age, the candidates most eligible to compete are—

William Harrington, Upper Heathcote School,

George Gordon, St. Luke’s School.

The papers of all the candidates are respectfully submitted to the decision of the Board.
