HIS Honor the Superintendent directs it to be notified that he has been pleased to appoint the following Gentlemen to act as Commissioners to inquire generally into the Civil Service of the Province—

NOTICE.

THE Partnership heretofore subsisting between JAMES NINNIS, FREDERICK JENKINS, and FREDERICK JONES, at Kaiapoi, Canterbury, Flax Manufacturers, has this day been dissolved by mutual consent, so far as regards the said James Ninnis. The business will continue to be carried on by the said Frederick Jenkins and Frederic Jones, under the style of “Jenkins, Jones, and Company,” who will discharge all liabilities, and receive all accounts due to the late firm.

For the month was 62° 6’, showing a slight increase on January, instead of as usual a falling off. The wind was in general light and variable, but blew hard on the 14th from East, and from the N.W. on the 21st, 23th, and 26th, besides some heavy squalls from S.W. on the 23rd. The mean daily velocity was 193 miles, mean direction N. 71° E. Greatest and least daily range of temperature, 30° 3 and 5° 7 respectively. Spontaneous evaporation, 6° 705 inches. For remaining particulars see Table.

The depth of rain which fell in Christchurch between January 1 and February 28 each year was as follows:—

1864 ... 3’442 inches on 15 days.
1865 ... 1’872 „ 10 „
1866 ... 5’753 „ 14 „
1867 ... 1’511 „ 10 „

Rainfall in Lyttelton during the month of February, 0’882 inches, on 7 days; greatest daily fall, 0’279 inches, on the 27th.

Hokitika.

Heavy fall of rain on the night of the 7th, otherwise the weather was very fine and dry from the 1st to the 15th. Remainder of the month very changeable; thunder storms with heavy rain on the 17th and 21st; showery on the 16th, 23rd, and 25th; fog and mist on the 20th and 26th. Total rainfall, 4’98 inches, on 11 days. Total rainfall since 1st January 12’08 inches, on 28 days. Mean temperature 61° 9, or 2° 2 less than in Christchurch. No gales or very high winds. Greatest velocity in 24 hours, 368 miles on the 7th. General direction of the wind, N. 16° 5, S. 11° 5, E. 4° 5, W. 22° 5. Mean direction, N. 75° W.

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW ZEALAND, CANTERBURY DISTRICT.

In the matter of the “Debtors and Creditors Acts;” and

In the matter of the estate of Joseph Beswick, of Kaiapoi, in the said district, Secretary for Public Works, a debtor; and also

In the matter of the petition of William Cockerill Beswick, of Timaru, in the said district, Gentleman, and Thomas Williamson Hall, of the same place, Stockman; creditors of the said Joseph Beswick.

TAKE NOTICE that by an order of the Supreme Court of New Zealand, dated the Eighteenth day of April instant, the estate and effects of the said Joseph Beswick were sequestrated for the benefit of his creditors; and

TAKE NOTICE that the said Court has appointed Monday, the Thirteenth day of May next, for the hearing of the said petition and the proofs of debts and the claims of creditors.
