Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, Oct. 18, 1865.

HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the publication of the following Report of a Commission appointed by him to enquire into certain matters connected with the management of the Timaru Hospital.

EDW. JOLLIE,
Provincial Secretary.

TIMARU HOSPITAL.

Christchurch, Oct. 6, 1865.

Sir,—In compliance with the instructions conveyed in your Honor’s letter of the 25th ult., we have held an enquiry as to the truth of certain charges of neglect brought against Dr. Christy, the Medical Officer of the Timaru Hospital, and also as to the management of the Hospital since it has been under Dr. Christy’s control.

We have the honor to enclose herewith the evidence taken by us, together with the petition containing the charges, and other papers forwarded to us for our information and guidance.

Before proceeding to take evidence we inspected the Hospital, which we found scrupulously clean and orderly; the books were in good order and regularly kept, and the patients, three in number, appeared well cared for and comfortable. We asked each of them whether they had any complaints to make. They said not; that they got all they wanted, and were comfortable. One of the women said that the matron, though attentive, was not always kind in her manner to them, but that otherwise she had nothing to complain of. The Hospital has till lately been only capable of holding five patients; some additions have just been made which will enable the surgeon in charge to take in six patients, and to dispense medicine on the premises. We beg, however, to draw the attention of the Government to the fact that the Hospital is situated on a bad site, which will become more unfitted for the purpose every year, as buildings grow up.
