BOARD OF EDUCATION.

INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.

(January 26th—February 23rd, 1865.)

To the Honorable H. J. Tancred,
Chairman.

Sir,—

I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on schools examined and other business transacted during the month.

Five schools, including 198 children, have been examined.

The examination of several schools have been deferred on account of negligence either of the local committees, or the teachers, as to the information required in reply to the usual official notice, or for other causes.

Sixteen schools have (since the 30th December, 1864) benefited by supplies from the Educational Depôt, to the amount of £40 1s 10d.

Lewis Parsons, candidate for Duvauchelle’s Bay school, attended on the 7th instant, (February) for examination, as per special report of that date.

John Riedy, candidate for any vacancy in a school, attended on the 14th instant, for examination, and showed himself to be qualified to take charge of an elementary school.

Of the schools examined:

  • Lower Heathcote, February 2, present 23, satisfactory.
  • St. Andrew’s School, February 9, present 36, much improved.
  • St. Luke’s School, February 10, present 72, very satisfactory.
  • Kaiapoi Wesleyan School, February 16, present 29, improved.
  • Woodend School, February 17, present 38, satisfactory.

The examinations postponed were the:

  • Heathcote Valley School, for February 8th: The notices to chairman of local committee and the teacher not answered.
  • That of St. Alban’s School, for February 13th, the teacher ill.
  • That of Christchurch Wesleyan School, for February 14th, the school removing to temporary premises.
  • Papanui Wesleyan School, February 15th, no answer sent by teacher to notice enclosed to chairman of local committee.

The details of each examination are entered in the Journal.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of Schools.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.

(February 24th—March 30th, 1865.)

To the Honorable H. J. Tancred,
Chairman.

Sir,—

I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on the schools examined and other business transacted during the month.

Seven schools, including 374 children, have been examined.

The examination of five other schools, to have been examined by your direction during this month have been postponed by your permission, on account of serious illness in my own family.

Twelve schools have benefited by supplies from the Depôt, to the amount of £26 4s.

The Depôt is at present well supplied. Another consignment may be expected in June or July. The person employed in England is in the habit of occasionally substituting articles differing in price and description from those sent out by the Board, and published in the catalogue of the Depôt. Much inconvenience will result by the continuance of this practice.

Shelves or cupboards are now requisite to prevent the stock in hand from being injured by dust.

Of the schools examined:

  • Kaiapoi Church of England School, February 27, present 35, very satisfactory.
  • St. Michael’s, Christchurch, March 1 and 2, present 170, very satisfactory.
  • Leithfield School, March 6, present 14, new teacher.
  • Ashley Bank, March 7, present 12, satisfactory.
  • Rangiora, March 8, present 61, improved.
  • Lyttelton Church of England, March 22, present 53, some improvement.
  • Lyttelton Wesleyan, March 23, present 29, new teacher.
