I observed a deficiency of books, &c., in the following schools:

I have much pleasure in stating that the schools generally are making progress fairly proportioned to the staff and materiel.

SUMMARY REPORT, &c., OF INSPECTOR OF SCHOOLS.
TO THE HONORABLE H. J. TANCRED,
Chairman.
SIR—
I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Tabular Summary of the quarterly returns as to attendance and payments (in ordinary schools) and schedule as to the efficiency of ordinary schools examined, both for the quarter ending December 31st.
It will be seen from the tabular summary that during the quarter,
The number of attendants has been 1808.
The average daily attendance, 1220.
The amount of school fees, £624 19s 9d.
These statistics relate to the 31 ordinary schools at work during the quarter, including in that number the new school in the Halswell District, which commenced in October.
It will be seen from the schedule as to efficiency, that the number of ordinary schools examined during the quarter has been 25, including 1186 children, present at the examinations.
The several schools examined have been reported in the monthly reports, and the details of each examination are entered in the Journal.
I add to this report an abstract of the teachers’ returns for the year ending December, 1864.
