BOARD OF EDUCATION.
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
(July 1—28.)
The Honorable H. J. Tancred,
Chairman.
Sir,—
I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on the schools examined and other business transacted during the month.
My time having been chiefly occupied with the materials of a report for the quarter ending March, I have only examined during this month two schools, the Ashley, and the Leithfield, omitted during last month.
One candidate (Miss Jane Fraser) for the post of Assistant Mistress at the Christchurch St. Michael’s school, passed a successful examination.
Arrangements have been made for the examination of the schools and candidates during August.
Seventeen schools have benefited by supplies from the Educational Depot, to the amount of £89 14s 8d.
Of the schools examined:
The Ashley School.
July 18—Present 14.
A well-built school-room with a liberal supply of furniture, books and apparatus. Methods, very careful; the progress in elementary, sacred, and secular knowledge, since the so recent commencement with the very rudiments, is very satisfactory.
The Leithfield School.
July 18—Present 11.
Apparatus &c., wanted. Method, skilful; spelling improvable; other attainments satisfactory.
The particulars of each examination are detailed in the Journal.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
J. P. RESTELL,
Inspector of schools.
BOARD OF EDUCATION.
INSPECTOR’S SUMMARY REPORT FOR THE MONTH.
(July 29—August 25.)
The Honorable H. J. Tancred,
Chairman Board of Education.
Sir,—
I have the honor, in obedience to your instructions, to submit a Summary Report on the schools examined and other business transacted during the month.
Eight schools, including 216 children, have been examined.
Two candidates have been examined:
James Bush, for the assistantship of Lyttelton Wesleyan School, unsuccessful, August 1st;
Henry Warren, for the assistantship Christchurch Wesleyan School, successful, August 22nd.
Arrangements have been made and notices sent for examinations during September.
Four schools have benefited by supplies from the Educational Depot to the amount of £12 12s 2d.
Of the schools examined:
Lower Heathcote, on Ferry Road.
August 2—Present 20.
The school continues to make creditable progress in elementary, sacred and secular knowledge. It is an elementary (or dame’s school), it is not equal to the wants of this rapidly increasing district. The mistress will probably retire in the course of a few months.
Upper Heathcote on Lincoln Road.
August 3—Present 24.
Books and apparatus deficient; elementary lesson books and tablets, and maps, wanted. This school deserves high commendation for its superior tone and discipline, and the creditable progress of the pupils during several years.
Riccarton School.
August 4—Present 23.
Good discipline and methods—creditable progress. The school is carefully and successfully conducted by a skilled teacher.
Timaru School.
August 12—Present 39, (weather unfavorable).
The school has suffered from much neglect and mismanagement previous to the appointment of the present master. He appears to have worked alone in a very painstaking and conscientious manner. His earnestness has made up for want of sufficient experience. Until after the establishment of the Educational Depot, the progress had been hindered by want of books, of which the master has obtained a liberal supply at his own cost. Maps are wanted, also desks and other furniture for the new school-room. The progress made is, under the circumstances, creditable.
