\n### Bringing into Operation the Colonial Defence Force Act, 1862
\nBy His Excellency Sir George Grey, Knight,
\nCommander of the Most Honourable Order
\nof the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-
\nChief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of
\nNew Zealand and its Dependencies, and
\nVice-Admiral of the same, &c., &c.
\nWHEREAS by an Act of the General
\nAssembly of New Zealand, intituled
\n“An Act for raising a Force for the Internal
\nDefence of the Colony,” it is enacted that
\nthe said Act shall come into force on and
\nafter a day to be fixed by the Governor by
\nProclamation in the ‘Government Gazette.’
\nNow therefore I, Sir George Grey,
\nGovernor of New Zealand, in pursuance of
\nthe provisions of the said in part recited Act,
\ndo hereby proclaim and declare that the
\naforesaid “Act for Raising a Force for the
\nInternal Defence of the Colony,” shall come
\ninto force on and after the date hereof.
\nGiven under my hand, at New
\nPlymouth, and issued under the
\nseal of the Colony of New Zealand,
\nthis Fifth day of May, in the
\nyear of our Lord, one thousand
\neight hundred and sixty-three.

\n### Admitting Cattle into the Province of Otago
\n### from Queensland, Tasmania, and Twofold Bay, in New South Wales.
\nBy the Honourable John Hyde Harris,
\nEsquire, Superintendent of the said Pro-
\nvince.
\nWHEREAS by an Act of the General
\nAssembly of New Zealand, intituled the
\n“Diseased Cattle Act, 1861,” the Superin-
\ntendent of the Province of Otago, by virtue
\nof the powers delegated to him under the
\nsaid Act, did proclaim and declare that from
\nthe date of the said Proclamation all Districts,
\nPorts, and Places, out of the main land of
\nthe North and Middle Islands of New Zea-
\nland, should be deemed to be Infected
\nDistricts within the meaning and for the
\npurposes of the said Act:
\nAnd whereas the Governor in Council
\nhath by Warrant under his hand delegated
\nto me, John Hyde Harris, so long as I shall
\nhold the office of Superintendent of the Pro-
\nvince of Otago, the several powers vested in
\nthe Governor by the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th
\nSections of the said Act, subject to
\nbe rescinded as in the said Act is provided, and
\nsubject to the Regulations issued by the
\nGovernor in Council on the 1st day of Octo-
\nber, 1861: And whereas by the 4th of the
\nsaid Regulations it is provided that in the
\nexercise of the powers delegated under the
\n9th Section of the said Act the Superinten-
\ndent of any Province may from time to time,
\nby Proclamation in the Government Gazette
\nof the Province, rescind any Proclamation of
\nan Infected District, wholly or as to any
\npart thereof:
\nNow therefore I, the said John Hyde
\nHarris, by virtue of the powers vested in
\nme in this behalf, do hereby proclaim and
\ndeclare that I do hereby rescind the aforesaid
\nProclamation of the 5th day of June, 1862,
\nso far as the same relates to the Colony of
\nQueensland, the Colony of Tasmania, and the
\nPort and District of Twofold Bay, in the
\nColony of New South Wales, and I do hereby
\ndeclare that the said Districts shall not,
\nfrom the date hereof until further notice, be
\ndeemed to be Infected Districts within the
\nmeaning and for the purposes of the above-
\nmentioned Act.
\nAnd I do hereby further declare that it
\nshall be lawful for me, the said Superin-
\ntendent, to allow Cattle to be landed from
\nvessels from the Chatham Islands, subject to
\nsuch conditions and restrictions as I may
\ndeem expedient and the circumstances of any
\ncase may require.
\nGiven under my hand and issued
\nunder the Public Seal of the Pro-
\nvince of Otago, at Dunedin, this
\n(L.S.) Sixth day of June, one thousand
\neight hundred and sixty-three.

\n### Delegated to the respective Superintendents
\n### of the Provinces of Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and Otago
\nColonial Secretary’s Office,
\nAuckland, 9th June, 1863.
\nHIS Excellency the Governor has been
\npleased to delegate, under the
\n“Diseased Cattle Act, 1861,” to the respec-
\ntive Superintendents of the Provinces of
\nHawke’s Bay, Canterbury, and Otago, the
\nseveral powers vested in the Governor by the
\n2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th sections of the
\nsaid Act, subject to be rescinded, as in the
\nsaid Act provided, and subject to the regu-
\nlations contained in the Order in Council, dated
\n15th September, 1862.
