✨ Immigration Report

Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, 15th January, 1862.
HIS Honor the Superintendent directs the publication of the following Report of the Immigration Commissioners for public information.
THOMAS WILLIAM MAUDE,
Provincial Secretary.
SHIP “MYSTERY.”
The Commissioners report that they visited the ship Mystery on the 7th day of January, 1862, immediately upon her arrival. They were satisfied with the state of the vessel. The immigrants also expressed themselves as generally well pleased with the officers of the ship, and the Surgeon Superintendent.
A communication made to the Commissioners induced them to request a perusal of the official log (extract enclosed).*
The Chairman wrote to the Surgeon, enclosing extract, and giving him the opportunity of making any explanation or counter-statement he might think advisable; also pointing out to him that the report in the log would prevent his receiving the certificate entitling him to his gratuity.
The Surgeon’s reply enclosed.*
The Captain of the Mystery reports to the Commission that he believes the girl to be of very bad character. That since the transaction the Surgeon’s conduct has been irreproachable. That the Surgeon was for eight weeks banished from the cuddy, taking his meals in his own cabin between decks. (This in consequence of a letter addressed to the Captain by the chief-cabin passengers.)
The Commissioners present their report in detail for the consideration of the Provincial Government. They cannot recommend that the Surgeon should receive the balance of the usual gratuity (ten pounds thereof had been advanced by Mr. Marshman in England).
WM. DONALD, Chairman.
H. S. McKELLAR.
JOHN T. ROUSE.
