β¨ Correspondence regarding Timaru anchorage
3
Received on board from the shore 50
bales of wool the same afternoon we
arrived, taking the bales on board at
the rate of about 20 bales an hour
from one boat ; lay at anchor all that
night with sails reefed and stowed, with
a spring upon the cable ready to cast
and slip ; the next day was calm, with
moderate swell ; received on board 60
bales more wool, at about the same
rate as above, which completed the
cargo there was ready for shipment ; it
continued calm until 7 o\'clock, P.M.,
with a falling barometer ; 7 30, P.M.,
fresh wind from the south-east, very
dirty weather with lightning ; hove
short and made sail ; at 8, P.M., weighed,
at that time blowing strong. It will
be evident that the winds I had both
arriving and sailing were about as un-
favourable as I well could have, but I
had no difficulty either anchoring or
leaving. I remarked that the waves
do not break until close home on the
beach, which I consider is much in
favour of the place. I may inform you
that I have been to both Portland Bay
and Port Fairy, in Victoria, and I con-
sider that Timaru is better than either.
I have also visited many other open
roadsteads, and I consider that Timaru
is as good as the best I have seen, and
with good moorings, it would, in my
opinion, be a safe place for large ves-
sels to visit. I may add that Captain
Cain, who is stationed at Timaru, and
attends to the shipment of wool, &c.,
was most assiduously attentive to his
duties.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient and respectful
servant,
C. CONRADI,
Master Mariner.
To his Honor J. E. Fitz
Gerald, Esq., Super-
intendent of the Pro-
vince of Canterbury.
