Government Correspondence and Financial Report

gentlemen to the Commission of the
Peace for the Province of Canterbury,
and in which you state that your communication on this subject has remained
unanswered for several months, I have
the honor to inform you, that assuming
the despatch to which you allude is one
addressed to this office by the Provincial Secretary of Canterbury dated the
12th of May last, and which was received at this office on the 1st ultimo, I
beg to refer your Honor to the answer
addressed to you on the 3rd of last month.

As it is possible however, that this
communication was sent directly to
Canterbury without having been seen
by your Honor, I beg to enclose here-
with a copy for your information.

I have further to inform you that it
is not the intention of the Government
to take any action with respect to the
issue of fresh Commissions of the
Peace for any of the Provinces during
the present Session of the General

Sir,

With reference to the letters quoted
in the Margin (12 & 13 May, 1856)
which I have received from the Provincial Secretary of Canterbury recommending by desire of your Honor
that Mr. Joseph Brittan and other
gentlemen should be placed in the
Commission of the Peace for that
Province and respecting that it would
be for the benefit of the Public Service
if Mr. Brittan’s appointment were at
once made, I have the honor by the
direction of his Excellency the Governor to inform you that a Commission
of the Peace has been issued to
Mr. J. Brittan.

The name of the other gentlemen
recommended will be taken into consideration in connection with the
general subject of the issue of New
Commissions of the Peace, on which
the Government has not yet come to a
determination.

I have, &c.,

His Honor the Superintendent

Christchurch, Aug. 30, 1856.

Sir,

In reply to your despatch of the 4th
August on the subject of the appointment of additional Magistrates for the
Province of Canterbury, I can only
remark, that as I had, in obedience to
his Excellency’s instructions, asked
several gentlemen referred to in my
former letter, whether they were
willing to act as Magistrates, it will be
my duty to publish this correspondence.

I must respectfully decline to offer
any advice to the General Government
in future on the subject of such
appointments.

I have, &c.,
(Signed) James Edward Fitz Gerald,
