PROCLAMATION.

JAMES EDWARD FITZ GERALD,
Superintendent of the Province of
Canterbury, in the exercise of the
powers vested in me in that behalf, do
hereby this day prorogue the Provin-
cial Council of the said Province until
the third day of March next, and
the said Provincial Council is hereby
prorogued accordingly.

Given under my hand at Christ-
church, this 23rd day of May, in
the year of our Lord, 1856.

PUBLIC NOTICE.

Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Christchurch, May 30, 1856.

All Persons are hereby cautioned
against encroaching upon the un-
sold portion of the Town Reserves,
either by making banks or digging
ditches thereon, as persons so offend-
ing will be proceeded against according
to law.

HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT
directs it to be
notified for general information that a
Writ for the Election of a Member for
the Electoral District of the Town of
Christchurch having been issued in
accordance with Clause 12 of an Act
of Parliament, passed in the 16th and
17th years of Her present Majesty, en-
titled “An Act to grant a Represen-
tative Constitution to the Colony
of New Zealand”... The Returning
Officer for the said District has returned
the said Writ with a certificate to the
effect that the undermentioned Gentle-
man has been duly elected to serve as
a Member of the Provincial Council,
For the Town of Christchurch—
