PROCLAMATION

For a Day of Solemn Fast, Humiliation, and Prayer.

By His Excellency Lieutenant-Colonel ROBERT HENRY WYNYARD, a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, the Officer Administering the Government of New Zealand, &c., &c.

WHEREAS, taking into Her most serious consideration the just and necessary War in which Her Majesty is engaged, Her Majesty, by a Royal Proclamation bearing date the twenty-fourth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-four, hath commanded that a public Day of Solemn Fast, Humiliation, and Prayer, be observed throughout the United Kingdom of England and Ireland, so that Prayer and Supplication may be made to the Divine Majesty for imploring His Blessing and Assistance on Her Majesty’s arms for the restoration of Peace to Her Majesty and her dominions, and hath charged and commanded that such Public Fast Day be reverently and devoutly observed:

And whereas it is fitting that a day be set apart to be observed in like manner in this portion of Her Majesty’s dominions: Now therefore, I, the Officer administering the Government, in pursuance of the authority in me vested, do hereby proclaim and declare that a public day of Solemn Fast, Humiliation, and Prayer, be observed throughout the Islands of New Zealand, that is to say, throughout the Province of Auckland in the said islands, on Tuesday, the 22nd day of August instant, and throughout the other Settlements of the Islands aforesaid,

that is to say, in the Province of New Plymouth, the Province of Wellington, the Province of Nelson, the Province of Canterbury, and the Province of Otago, on such day as may be named for that purpose by the Superintendents of each of the said Provinces respectively, so that we may humble ourselves before Almighty God, and send up our Prayers and Supplications to the Divine Majesty for imploring His Blessing and Assistance on Her Majesty’s arms for the restoration of Peace. And I hereby charge and enjoin that the said days be reverently and devoutly observed.

Given under my hand and issued under the Public Seal of the Islands of New Zealand, at Auckland, this eighth day of August, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-four.
