Correspondence on Road Construction

Auckland Provincial Government Gazette.

this might place the Provincial Government in an awkward position, and in the end only retard matters, so I acted as above. Am now going to see Mr. Puckey. 250 applications for work at office; only from 40 to 50 out to work this morning.

JAMES M. McLAREN,
District Engineer.

(12.)
Auckland, 26th January, 1876.
To Mr. McLaren,
Grahamstown.

Thanks for telegram about works. Do not at any account attempt to force the road; work only in places where the natives do not object. What arrangements will suit you best as regards remitting money?

READER WOOD.

(13.)
Grahamstown, 26th January, 1876.
Reader Wood, Esq.,
Provincial Treasurer, Auckland.

As men had no money, and storekeepers would not trust them, I made arrangements to pay twice a week; will go up and pay to-night. Had to start with day labor, not knowing where I may be turned off, and the men being strangers to one another; but as soon as I can get parties to agree I will as far as possible let the work in small contracts in those places where I think there is not likely to be any obstruction.

Could Mr. Lusk place £500 to my public account in the usual way? Have enough on hand to make all payments this week.

JAMES M. McLAREN,
District Engineer.

NOTE.—£250 advanced to Mr. McLaren on account.—R. B. LUSK. 28th January, 1876.

(14.)
Thames, January 27, 1876.
SIR,—

I have the honor to forward you a copy of a letter this day sent to the District Engineer, Grahamstown. I also enclose you a rough plan of the Church Mission land at Puriri, showing roads laid off by the Society’s Engineer.

The road now being made by the Provincial Government District Engineer is about the telegraph line, quite an unsuitable position for a road, being up and down exceedingly steep hills, and through deep swamps.

I have, &c.,

F. C. DEAN.

His Honor the Superintendent
of the Province of Auckland.

ENCLOSURE.

(Copy.)
Grahamstown, Thames,
January 27, 1876.

SIR,—

As agent by power of attorney for the Church Missionary Society for Africa and the East, I hereby give you notice to at once desist from making any road through the land of the Church Missionary Society at Puriri, except on the roads surveyed through the said land by Mr. Robert Macfarland, and the position of which roads are shown on a plan deposited in the proper office in Auckland, and of which plan a copy has been delivered to you some months back.

I further give you notice that the road you are now cutting through the Church Mission property is not only without my sanction, but in direct opposition to the opinion of Mr. Macfarland, a competent engineer and surveyor, will be closed and not allowed to be used. The road from Shortland to Ohinemuri, laid off through the lands by the Society’s Engineer,

is in a good position (in fact the only fit one for such road); whereas the one you are attempting to make is very unsuitable, and from the formation of the ground can never be made a good road.

A copy of this letter has been sent to the Hon. Dr. Pollen, and to His Honour the Superintendent of Auckland.

Yours, &c.,

F. C. DEAN.

J. M. McLaren, Esq.,
District Engineer, Thames.

(15.)
Auckland, January 28, 1876.
To Mr. McLaren,
Grahamstown.

Have received complaint from Dean about road through Mission land at Puriri. Can you not adjust the matter amicably with him, as the Mission have a road laid off through their property?

READER WOOD.

(16.)
Auckland, February 2, 1876.
To Hon. Colonial Treasurer,
Wellington.

One thousand pounds authorised by Dr. Pollen for works on goldfields to prevent distress. Over one hundred men employed. Please send the money.

READER WOOD,
Provincial Treasurer.

NOTE.—£1000 paid to Provincial account this day.

R. B. LUSK.

February 7th, 1876.

JAMES M. McLAREN,
District Engineer.

(17.)
Grahamstown, February 3, 1876.
To Sir George Grey, K.C.B.,
Auckland.

Captain Fraser states that you authorised the putting on of the unemployed on the Waitekauri road. No instructions have been yet received here; if allowed we will provide two or more skilled men to direct them.

R. BLEAZARD.

JOHN BROWN.

(18.)
Auckland, 3rd February, 1876.
To Mr. McLaren,
Grahamstown.

The Superintendent wishes the men to be employed on the Waitekauri road.

READER WOOD.

(19.)
Auckland, 3rd February, 1876.
To Messrs. Bleazard and John Brown,
Grahamstown.

Mr. McLaren has been instructed to employ the men on the Waitekauri road.

G. GREY.

(20.)
Grahamstown, 8th February, 1876.
To Sir George Grey, K.C.B.,
Auckland.

Several men with large families have applied to Board for employment. Could your Honor authorise Mr. McLaren to expend £100 (of the £1,000 given by Dr. Pollen) to complete repairs in Waiotahi, the £110 granted by you being insufficient.

A. BRODIE,
Chairman Waiotahi Board.

(21.)
Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 8th February, 1876.
SIR,—
