inhabitants, than to expend public funds in partially depopulating it by the removal from it of an industrious and able-bodied population.
No country more requires a railroad than the Thames requires one to connect it with the Waikato. Such a railroad, I am satisfied, could be constructed by private enterprise, at no cost to the public. The plan the Government undertook to enter upon removes from such a district, at a considerable public charge, a very valuable population, in order that they may construct a railroad at another place, where it certainly is not more requisite than at the Thames.
I have, &c.,
G. Grey.
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary,
Auckland.
(53.)
General Government Offices,
Auckland, 14th March, 1876.
Sir,
At the request of the Mayor of Grahamstown, I have the honor to forward herewith copy of a telegram just received.
I have, &c.,
Daniel Pollen.
His Honor the Superintendent,
Auckland.
[ENCLOSURE.]
Grahamstown, 14th March, 1876.
To Hon. D. Pollen,
Auckland.
The Mayor was waited upon by a deputation representing 180 workmen who have signed agreement to take work with Mr Oakes at Wellington. I am satisfied that the great majority are destitute, or are at least unable to pay their own passage, and having been led to expect means of conveyance, are now much disappointed at the view taken on the question of their conveyance. I promised to put before you three facts—
- Men destitute.
- Work at Wellington.
- No immediate employment here.
Please send copy to Hon. Superintendent.
J. E. Macdonald,
Mayor.
(54.)
Superintendent’s Office,

I have, &c.,
G. Grey.
The Hon. the Colonial Secretary,
Auckland.
(55.)
Auckland, 14th March, 1876.
To His Worship the Mayor,

Sir,
Dr. Pollen asked me to say whether I desired or did not desire that the men whom the agent of Messrs. Oakes and McKirdy had selected, or might select, to the number of one hundred and fifty, at the Thames, should be removed at the public expense...
