Feb. 16 2 Admitted for typhoid fever, in a very low state; pulse scarcely perceptible, tense feeling on right side of abdomen, diarrhoea and delirium, rapidly sank. Numerous and extensive patches of ulceration were found in the small intestines, mesenteric glands greatly enlarged.
10 M Alexander Flewell 68 Cancer of tongue 1874. June 16 Feb. 23 253 Admitted for cancer of the tongue, with the glands of the neck involved; suffering much pain, also difficulty in even swallowing liquids. Was attacked with pneumonia, which carried him off. The left lung was found in a state of purulent infiltration.
11 M Patrick P. Murphy 60 Liver disease 1875. Jan. 20 Feb. 23 35 Admitted suffering from jaundice and dropsy. Tapped and got temporary relief. Cancer of the stomach pyloric end. Liver hobnailed. Kidneys granular. Heart large aortic dilatation.
12 M Patrick McGuire 38 Urinary Abscess Jan. 20 Feb. 28 40 Admitted for urinary abscess, the result of stricture of the urethra of old standing; the matter apparently got vent from the bulbous part of the urethra, and found its way among the fasciae of the abdomen and abdominal muscles, requiring long incisions to allow free exit to prevent burrowing. No examination of the body after death permitted.
13 M John Smith 43 Burns Mar. 2 Mar. 2 13 hours Admitted at 1.15 a.m., covered more or less with burns from head to foot, received at a fire at Newton, and in that painful state walked from Newton to the Hospital; on arrival the pulse could scarcely be felt; shivered violently. Never rallied. Had his faculties clear to the last. Inquest held.
14 M Benjamin Hill 31 Bright's disease of the kidneys 1874. Aug. 11 Mar. 12 313 Admitted for stricture of urethra, complicated with disease of the kidneys. Had also a cough of a bronchitic character. Gradually sank. Kidneys were found granular, and tubercles in right lung.
15 M James McGinty 69 Heart disease 1875. Mar. 15 Mar. 18 3 Had extensive heart disease and chronic diarrhoea. Was admitted from the Refuge for Old Men.
16 F Jane Stewart 22 Measles Mar. 15 Mar. 25 10 Admitted for measles of a malignant type. Eruption livid, uncontrollable vomiting and purging, ending in exhaustion. Upon examining the body there was found a considerable sized patch of inflammation of the pyloric end of the stomach; also the lower end of the large intestine highly inflamed. The other organs healthy.
