Remarks.

The health of the prisoners has continued excellent, the cases of illness having been of ordinary character, the total being little more than half of the preceding year. Only one death occurred — a case of convulsions in a female whose habits had been intemperate. The post-mortem examination revealed a highly-congested, almost apoplectic, condition of the brain. On August 11th a man sustained a compound comminuted fracture of left leg in consequence of a large mass of rock falling on him while at work in the quarry. Amputation below the knee was immediately performed, and an excellent recovery was the result. This case is remarkable as being the only one in which amputation was required since the opening of the prison. A Maori was capitally punished for murder on February 19th. No action has yet been taken in the recommendation in past reports that a proper infirmary be provided for sick prisoners.
