Highway District Notification and Correspondence

Auckland Provincial Government Gazette.

PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY.

VOL. XXIV.] THURSDAY, JULY 8, 1875. [No. 36.

PUBLIC NOTIFICATION.

By His Honour Sir George Grey, Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Superintendent of the Province of Auckland.

IN pursuance of the fifteenth section of “The Highways Act, 1874,” I do hereby bring the said Act into force within the

EDEN TERRACE HIGHWAY DISTRICT,

and I do hereby appoint the First Meeting of Ratepayers to take place at the Eden Vine Hotel, on Monday, the 19th July instant, at seven o’clock in the evening; and Mr. James Reed to be Chairman of such Meeting.

Given under my hand at Auckland, this third day of July, One thousand eight hundred and seventy-five.

G. GREY,
Superintendent.

Superintendent’s Office,
Auckland, 5th July, 1875.

THE following Correspondence is published, by direction of His Honour the Superintendent, for general information.

READER WOOD,
Provincial Secretary.

Government Buildings,
Wellington, 22nd June, 1875.

To His Honour the Superintendent,
Auckland.

I have received your Honour’s messages (4) of yesterday. It is to be regretted that you will not see that this Government is disposed to do, and is doing, all that it can, consistently with its duty to the Colony, to assist the Provincial Government of Auckland in its present financial embarassment. I need hardly assure your Honour, however, that that circumstance will not be permitted to affect the course which Ministers have laid down for themselves, as regards provision for the immediate financial wants of the Provincial Treasury.

DANIEL POLLEN.

(2)

Grahamstown, 23rd June, 1875.

To Honourable Colonial Secretary,
Wellington.

Telegram of 22nd received. Pray take opinion of Solicitor-General if stoppage of capitation allowance was lawful or not. I am now advised it was unlawful. I have before pointed out that an advance of Six thousand pounds, to which I am satisfied this Province was lawfully entitled, was stopped. These acts and some others could not aid this Government. Nothing is, or has been, asked, or will be accepted, but legal rights. The course that I earnestly pray Ministers to lay down for themselves, and to adhere to, is to obey the law.

G. GREY.
