The number of admissions (594), into the Provincial Hospital, viz., during 1874, exceeded that of the previous year by 84, and the deaths (65) by 7, yielding a percentage of 10 on the total treated. Of the deaths the zymotic class has supplied 11, constitutional 10, local 34, developmental 2, and violent 3. Of 30 cases of Typhoid Fever 3 proved fatal. As usual the greatest amount of mortality caused by disease was owing to affections of the brain, chest, and liver. No instance occurred of fever or erysipelas spreading by communication in the wards of the hospital. As regards sex, 8 of the deaths occurred in females. The average number of days in hospital for each patient treated was 38 days. The number of capital amputations performed was 5, all of which recovered except one shoulder-joint case. Brief notes of the individual fatal cases are in the tabular statement accompanying the report.

Lengthy observations on the medical and surgical cases treated during the year do not seem to be called for, inasmuch as they did not present any features of special interest. Among cutaneous diseases, there occurred an example of the rare affection called “Keloid,” in a girl aged 9 years, whose features were so changed that she looked like a middle aged woman. It consists of a hypertrophy of the fibrous tissue of the true skin, similar to the elevated cicatrices of a burn, and sending out from a central patch offshoots resembling the claws of a crab, from which circumstance the name is derived. The usual remedies recommended in such cases were tried but without effect. Mention may be made of a case of fibrous polypus uteri, when the tumor was removed partly by ligature and partly by manipulation. It was of many years standing and weighed about a pound. Of the 41 fractures, the situations are as follows:--skull, 4; clavicle, 1; shoulder-blade, 1; ribs, 5; arm, 2; forearm, 2; hand, 1; pelvis, 2; thigh, leg, 12. The dislocation were principally of the shoulder. It is worthy of record that after an absence of upwards of 20 years measles has re-appeared in the Province of Auckland. The first case was imported from Australia.
